But did you know that your health plan likely also provides coverage in some capacity for mental health and substance abuse treatment, including inpatient alcohol and drug rehab centers?

The federal government requires almost all U.S. health plans to provide coverage in some capacity for mental health services, including treatment for substance use disorder.2 However, what is exactly covered under your specific plan varies. As such, it’s recommended that you call the number on the back of your insurance card to check your coverage.

You can also reach out to American Addiction Centers (AAC) via chat or helpline to work with a staff member who can help you learn more about your plan. For instant verification, enter your insurance information in the form below.

What Is BCBS of Oklahoma?

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma is a division of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC).3 HCSC is a Mutual Legal Reserve Company, which is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.1 BCBS of OK provides health insurance solutions in multiple markets to 800,000 covered members.1 As the state’s largest network of hospitals and physicians, BCBS of OK provides flexible health plan designs in many different markets.3

Specifically, BCBS of OK offers plans to the Health Insurance Marketplace for individual and family plans, Medicare plans, and student health plans.4 BCBS of OK also provides vision insurance plans, supplemental health insurance plans, dental plans, and travel medical and expatriate plans.4 “Shop Plans” tab To find out what type of plan you have, call the number on the back of your insurance plan.

How Much Does BCBS of Oklahoma Cover (Addiction Treatment)?

When you evaluate your BCBS of OK plan, you’ll want to consider how much your plan will cover in terms of treatment. There are many different BCBS of OK plans, which means there are different plan designs. Every plan will treat coverage in its own way, and treatment may be subject to copays, deductibles, and coinsurance.

You’ll want to call the number on the back of your insurance card or log in to your online BCBS of OK portal to view your summary of benefits coverage to find out how much your specific plan covers regarding addiction treatment.

Regardless of how your plan covers treatment, there are common treatment methods that may be recommended for you if you’re on the path to recovery.

  • Inpatient or residential rehab. With a residential or inpatient rehab, a patient will receive care in and live at the facility for the duration of their care. At inpatient facilities, patients work with medical staff, therapists, and nurses, to get the care that they need, which could include withdrawal mitigation, medical detox, and rehabilitative care.5, Pg 8, “What types of treatment programs are available?” Para 2,
  • Outpatient rehab or therapy. With outpatient rehab or therapy, patients will receive their treatment during a session at a facility, but they can return home following the session. The frequency of outpatient rehab could be 1 to 2 times a week or less frequently.5, Pg 10, Para 2
  • Intensive outpatient programs. With IOPs, patients will receive their treatment at an outpatient facility. It’s more intensive than a standard outpatient program, in which patients are required to attend a minimum number of hours of treatment each week. No overnight stay is required.5, Pg 10, Para 3
  • Partial hospitalization programs. With a PHP, which is also known as a day program, patients attend treatment at a facility for 4-8 hours per day, multiple days a week, where they receive a variety of types of treatment. However, you don’t need to stay overnight with this type of treatment.5, Pg 10, Para 1

These common types of addiction treatment may be covered fully or partially by your health insurance plan. However, just because these are listed doesn’t mean that they are guaranteed to be covered under your plan.

Always verify your coverage before seeking treatment unless it’s a true emergency. Similarly, be sure to work with your provider to ensure that you enroll in the right treatment program. In addition to the addiction treatment methods listed above, there may be other options, like veterans rehab, couples rehab, or spiritual rehab, that may be right for you and could possibly be covered under your plan.

Does Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma Provide Coverage for Mental Health Treatment Facilities?

Almost all U.S. health plans, including the Marketplace and Medicare plans sold by BCBS of OK, must provide coverage in some capacity for 10 essential health benefits, 1 of which is mental health services.2 This means that whether you’re seeking treatment for a mental illness, behavioral health services, or treatment for substance use disorders, coverage for mental health facilities must be provided to you in some capacity.2

This mandate enables many Americans to get the care they need, whether that be for stand-alone rehab or co-occurring disorder treatment. A co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis is what it is called when someone has both a substance use disorder and mental illness at the same time 6

Experts believe that, while 1 doesn’t cause the other directly, those with a mental illness are twice as likely to develop a substance use disorder at some point in their lifetime, and vice versa.7 Due to the interconnected nature of these conditions, tandem or integrated treatment, where each condition is treated separately at the same time, is often recommended.6 “What should I do?”

How Long Does BCBS of Oklahoma Insurance Cover Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs?

How long a health plan will cover drug and alcohol rehab programs will depend on your specific policy. BCBS of Oklahoma mental health coverage varies by plan, and coverage could be affected by where you live, where you seek treatment, the treatment you receive, and the extent of that treatment.

There may be a discrepancy in how long your plan covers treatment and how long you should be in treatment. You can often look up your plan’s details on your insurance card or call the number on the back of your card to speak with a plan representative.

Only your mental health provider can determine how long you should remain in treatment. Every patient’s path to recovery is different, with some needing more or less time in treatment than others. Experts agree that treatment should last at least 90 days to reduce or stop substance use and improve overall outcomes.8, bullet 5

Work with your personal health care provider to determine what is the best course of treatment for you, regardless of whether it may be covered under your insurance. Getting the care you need should be of the utmost importance.

What if My BCBS of Oklahoma Policy Does Not Cover an Inpatient Drug Rehab Program?

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma substance abuse treatment coverage can vary and may not fully or partially cover inpatient drug rehab programs at all facilities. If your plan doesn’t cover an inpatient or outpatient drug rehab program, you can ask the rehab facility directly about how to pay for rehab.

Depending on the rehab center you choose, there may be financing or scholarship options available to you, which can help offset some of the costs associated with care. Prioritizing getting the treatment you need now is essential; do not push it down the road.

BCBS of Oklahoma In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Inpatient Drug Rehab Centers

Whether an inpatient or outpatient drug rehab center is within your plan’s network could determine your out-of-pocket health care costs. In-network services refer to services provided by providers, facilities, or physicians that are contracted with your BCBS of OK plan.9 “In-Network” In-network services are covered at a higher benefit level.9 “In-Network” In contrast, out-of-network services are those rendered by providers that are not contracted with your BCBS of OK plan.9 “Out of -Network”

Depending on your plan, out-of-network services may not be covered by your plan or may be covered at a lower level, meaning you may be responsible for paying for part or all of your out-of-network bill.9 “Out of -Network” To find an in-network provider to help keep costs down, you can call the number on the back of your card, ask rehab centers directly if they accept your plan, or call the AAC helpline today.
